10 TOP TIPS…
on Basic Rotary Cutting

1. Lay your ironed fabric on the cutting board…

and place your grid square or ruler in the bottom right hand corner lining up the long and short edges as closely as you can with the fabric.

2. Release the blade guard on your cutter…

either by sliding the guard back or squeezing the guard release handle.

3. Place your left hand flat on the ruler palm down…

unless of course you are left handed in which case reverse these instructions.

4. Position the blade on the fabric against the bottom right corner of the square…

and standing centrally behind the line you are about to cut, roll the blade smoothly along the side of the ruler, keeping the cutter upright and maintaining an even pressure at all times.

5. When you have made your first cut do not move the ruler…

but ease the raw edge fabric away from the cut. If the fabric has not cut cleanly, repeat step 7. Some fabrics such as raw silk or satin rarely cut cleanly on the first try and may need several attempts.

6. Repeat steps 7 and 8 for the bottom edge of the fabric…

turning the square and fabric 90˚ anti-clockwise so the bottom edge becomes the right-hand edge.

7. Now you have your two straight edges you are ready to begin cutting your patchwork pieces...

Turn your fabric 180˚ clockwise and position your ruler or square as shown below, depending on how wide you require your fabric pieces.

8. Cut your first section referring to step 7

9. Set aside the remainder of the fabric and turn the cut section 90˚ clockwise...

Place your square or ruler according to the size you want your patchwork pieces to be and cut as required.

10. Repeat until you have the required number of patchwork pieces.
